The Drish House

Renovation

The Historic Drish House is one of Tuscaloosa’s most distinctive architectural landmarks. Built in 1837 for physician and contractor John R. Drish, the home originally stood at the center of the Monroe Place plantation and later evolved through several architectural additions, including its distinctive Italianate tower. Over the decades, the property served as a family residence, the Jemison School, an auto-parts warehouse, and a church. After years of neglect, the house was stabilized and ultimately rehabilitated as a private event venue. The restoration preserved an important piece of Tuscaloosa’s architectural history while giving the property a new purpose.

Harless & Company played a central role in transforming the nearly 200-year-old structure into a functional modern venue while respecting its historic character. The renovation addressed extensive masonry, stucco, roof, window, and woodwork repairs, while carefully incorporating new electrical, plumbing, fire-suppression, heating and cooling systems required to meet modern building codes. The project also included new restrooms, a catering kitchen, and pine flooring selected to complement the existing historic floors. Working within the constraints of the original solid-masonry construction, Harless & Company helped return the Drish House to active use, preserving its architectural character while creating a space equipped for weddings, gatherings, and other events. The project was recognized as the 2017 Alabama Home Builders Association Commercial Renovation Winner.
